random Native American stuff

Who was Pocahontas? Was she even Native American? How old was she? Why do I care? All great questions you may be thinking. I am here to answer them all. So, for starters, Pocahontas wasn't even her real name. Her actual name was Amuonte. Her nickname was Pocahontas, which some believe means "playful child". She was the daughter of the powerful tribal leader. The story goes that she is believed to have saved John Smiths life. Pocahontas's father wanted to kill John Smith for being an English man, but obviously she saved him. This is all according to the diary that John kept. He talked so highly of her beauty and bravery. And then they fell in love before he went back to England and she died. The real story goes, John Smith was captured by the Native Americans, but they ended up releasing him. While he was being held in captivity, Smith and Pocahontas talked a lot. They learned from each other. This learning included different languages, traditions, and other things such as that. There was talk of marriage but it never happened. When John Smith talked about being "in love" he was referring to Pocahontas. A 12 year old, native girl, so that's kind of gross. Thanks for trying to polish the story up for us Disney :) if you'd like to read more into this, the article I've been searching my data off of is listed below in the link!

5 Fun Native American Facts !!!!!!!

1. The word “avocado” is Nahuatl, a Central Mexican/Aztec Indian language, for “testicle.”

2.Certain Native American tribes would intentionally bend trees to mark trails and specific places they needed to remember. So if you see a "crazy" tree today, it may serve as a hidden Native American monument.

3. A lot of zoos in America save the feathers that come off many of their birds and have them distributed to Native American tribes for their various religious ceremonies.

4. Some Native Americans have a differing enzyme that tends to lead their bodies to develop an alcohol addiction easier.

5. A plague wiped out millions of Native Americans just before the pilgrims came, leaving the new settlers with clean fields that had already previously been planted with corn, obviously by the deceased Native Americans.

Why Do Native Americans Have So Many Tattoos?

Many tribes were known for their own significant Native Americans tattoos. These tattoos symbolized the different regions and tribes these men and women often came from. These tattoos also held mythical or spiritual meanings to the people who had them. A lot of people believed these tattoos gave them super natural abilities and powers. Maybe even strengths, many people got a tattoo of an animals who's strength they wanted to have and emulate.

Thanks for listening to my random facts!!! Happy blogging :)

  1. I liked that you included 5 interesting facts, and the fact that really caught my attention the most was the feathers. I have been wondering where they got their feathers from, and if they were real or fake. I also found it interesting that you included your thoughts about the tattoos, and the research that you found on them. I had no idea that the tattoos held a spiritual or mythical meaning, I think that is absolutely cool. I mean why do people get tattoos in general? I guess everyone has their own meanings toward them.

  2. I really enjoyed your post! The Pocahontas story was pretty dope, I never knew the real story behind her and may have killed my childhood a little but I'll live. And as for the tattoos bit, I would of never thought of this subject, but I find it awesome how these tattoos were believed to give them supernatural abilities. If this were true in any shape, way, or form, I'd definitely would get tattooed a some type of fish, because I love me some water lol.

  3. Wow, I never knew that Pocahontas real name was Amuonte! I looked up to Pocahontas when I was younger so hearing the real story is really shocking. I also did not know that Native Americans bent trees for trails. They must have been very strong because bending trees branches is hard to do.

  4. I knew the real story of Pocahontas but no one ever told me her real name was Amuonte; that really surprised me. I also knew addictions could be genetic but I didn't know Natives had an enzyme that makes them more prone to develop an alcohol addiction. Your blog really added onto information I knew and I liked that it left me a little shocked.

  5. I remember hearing about alcohol addiction being common for Native Americans because my great-grandpa was full blooded Native American and lived on the reservation as a kid. I never knew Pocahontas' real name was Amuonte. Disney really did us dirty as kids by not giving us the whole story!
