it's about to get real South American up in here
What's up my party people!!! It's blog #4, so y'all know the drill by now. Sit back and get ready for some South Africa knowledge :)
As always, thanks for reading my blog !!!
FACT #1: Okay, I don't know about anyone else, but my sisters make me watch the movie "Rio" all the time, and honestly, I do not complain. I've always loved the movie because of all the animals, bright colors, but most importantly the MUSIC! So basically in the movie there are these two birds and they get lost and they end up going to the Brazil traditional parade and celebration, Rio Carnival. Super great movie, 100% recommend it, but I just wanted to cover a little bit on what Carnival is and what's it's meaning. This festival is held the Friday before Ash Wednesday afternoon, the signifies the start of Lent. This festival include huge parades that are full of flashy costumes, floats, dancing, and of course very loud and upbeat music. This is basically just a 6 day party that everyone attends. To compare it to America, it's like a steroid pumped version of the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade! Carnival is the most popular holiday in Brazil! If you'd like to see more information on Carnival here's a link!

FACT #2: One of my favorite quotes is, "It takes two to tango". And that quote can get real petty real fast, but, let's look into the history of the tango, before we start the gossiping :). The tango originated in South America of course. It is a partner dance that was actually originated in the impoverished port areas of the continent. It was mostly practiced at the bars of the ports after the people got some spirits in them :). Since people were dancing at the bars, the bar owners had no choice but to hire bands to play live music to keep their crowd entertained! The dance then quickly spread to all of South America and then became a commonly known dance. The tango is now practiced everywhere in the world, you can watch people preform the tango on Dancing With The Stars. Below I am attaching a link for more information on the Tango, and a video of a very recent performance of the tango. **hint** KILLED HER HUSBAND, WACKED HIM!!!!!!!!

FACT #3: When we were sitting in class and we started talking about Panpipes, I thought it was so interesting, especially since I had so many when I was a kid. A panpipe is a wind instrument that originated in South America. This instrument was named after the Greek God "Pan". The sound the instrument makes makes is caused by blowing air through the top and the air hitting ridges at the bottom of the instrument. These ridges can be various things, ridges actually carved in there, pieces or corn, or even rocks!

I REALLY REALLY REALLY enjoyed the connections between American culture (Carole Baskin as well as Rio). It was really nice how you made those connections between the cultures. Also, my mom always says "it takes two to tango", I find both the saying and the dance very interesting! Anyways, I really enjoyed this blog!
ReplyDeleteHi, I really enjoyed your blog. When you think about Brazil you thing about the movie Rio. I really like the way you talked about the carnival and how it is signified to the start of Lent. In my blog, I also talked about the panpipes. it is fascinating how majestic it sounds.
ReplyDeleteI really loved how you had the movie "Rio" clip. It is one of my favorite movies and after seeing that I really wanted to attend Carnival. I wrote about the tango in my blog too and I thought it was interesting how it started of in bars and now it is known all over the world. It was also cool to see the tango with music that was different from traditional tango music.
ReplyDeleteThe movie really topped it off for me. Your blog is absolutely amazing. I love the movie "Rio," it was one of the movies that I enjoyed because it was upbeat and included culture. I also liked that you included the quote, "it takes two to tango," because that phrase is often expressed among people. I never knew that tango was originated in the impoverished part, and that it was practiced in bars. The dance seems so elegant and sophisticated at the same time, that it surprised me.
ReplyDeleteFirst, I just want to say that I love how you included the video of Carol Baskin (she definitely killer her husband though) when introducing the tango dance. I didn't expect to see them tango to that song so it made me laugh a little bit. I never realized you could do the tango with other kinds of music. I'm not sure why I never made that connection lol. Also I enjoyed learning about Carnival. I never knew the meaning behind the celebration and that it signifies the start of Lent.
